Wish I Knew Now What I Did Then

::Twilight Zone Music:: I did not highlight the bold line. I tried to unbold it (on my original), moved to another page and started over, and it keeps turning up bold.

I knew every character in Friends

Their on-screen and real life names

That the third step squeaked on the left

And stiff knees were a sure sign of rain

I knew my blue dress matched my eyes

The bank was busy on Friday

And no matter what I said or did

I knew you’d love me anyway

Wish I knew now what I did then

Forgetting you hasn’t come easy

I knew which sigh meant you’d give in

Which arm would reach out to hold me

Your smile in the morning, your kiss good night

And the comfort in being your friend

I know I’d never hurt again

If I knew now what I did then

I knew you liked snakes but not spiders

Kept your socks in the bottom drawer

Watched the weather channel each morning

Propped against the family room door

I knew your touch, you smell, your voice

The incredible warmth of your skin

I know I’d give most anything

To learn it all over again

I danced to the rhythm of your heart

Memorized each line on your face

Still felt the magic of your hands

Years after you took them away

Wish I knew now what I did then

Forgetting you hasn’t come easy

I know I’d never hurt again

If I knew now what I did then

Until you reviewed my new article, I didn't know about you and your work. Hey - from down in Georgia. This one is simple, deep, direct, and so soft and gentle, it leaves me with budding tears. That, my dear lady, isn't difficult, but it takes special and meaningful words, and you have penned a batch of them, here. Thank you for a brighter morning. - Bill

Thank you for your words. I think my father lives in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. Anyways, Thanks again.

'I danced to the rhythm of your heart'. That is so beautiful! What a wonderful poem, and so intelligently put together.

I read this twice to be sure I understood correctly. It really moved me. I particularly loved the lines... 'Still felt the magic of your hands / Years after you took them away'. It's been my experience that one always gets hurt again - its the one thing I have to make a conscious effort to stop caring about, i.e. love like you've never been hurt. Difficult. But possible. (I hope.)

I'll have to come back and read this again - but that's a sure sign I liked it.
I spent a lot of time this summer videoing a spider in the garden (for a video to accompany a poem)I've never had a relationship with a snake. I guess only have such involvements.

Like many other fellows, I sometimes wonder why attractive women go for guys like that - well, I admit I too watch the weather channel in the morning.

hi sandy, i know so many of us wish we knew now what we used to know, or wish that the world wouldn't change the way that it always does...great expression, souful piece.

regarding your bold issue, i can tell from the spacing that you've used word to create this. what happened, is that there is html underlying the text. so you should always take what you write in word, put it in a text editor like wordpad, and then take out any extra spacing or bolding there, save it as a text document and then copy and paste it. have a merry christmas!

A wonderful encapsulation that is beautifully personal but embraces the universal perfectly. The three-line tag is haunting and to me sounds like the chorus of a wonderful ballad of a song... in fact, the whole could be a tremendous Christmas Number One! Thank you for sharing such a deeply moving testimony to an irrepressible and enduring love. LOL Kate xx

But I guess we don't know so we can taste the sweetness of knowing and appreciate the difference when it does come so much deeper, just like in love. I also think our learning isn't very smooth. I ahve gone years without learning much and then wham bam in a matter of a few seconds I went through double paradigm shifting. Life is invigorating! Bill Cottringer
