The Slow Paper Crush
Valerie Hardin
He took my fragile paper heart from me
crushed it with the heal of his shoe
I picked it up to give to someone better
Who has no mouth full of clear sugar
For sweet words with no meaning
Who smiles at my gifts and places them close to the heart
He fooled them all
Placing on angel's wings for show
His friends not yet realize
The ugly soul behind the eyes
Crushing their paper friendship hearts to tight balls
But one day he will find
His wings of show with be mouth eaten
A valentine box empty
Sept for a few written in his own hand
Worn he will only find someone like him
With stiff smiles painted on paper dolls
Already crushed and broken
