Back into the aquifer's womb.

19th Century Muse

Plunging into the depths,
the dark part of the
aquifer's womb,
where life is

she returns to her
where gentle
waves rock
the watery

leaving her pink
triangle mound
of coral and

Like all moving
water, she is both
constant and

bringing forth life
and changing it
when necessary.

Toll in death,
smashed cities,
rampant diseases,
crippled economies.

The time for gestation
and meditation, time
for rebirth as she
pushes through to
give new birth to
the poet.

Take one last look.

She will arise again
from the sea foam.

She is the carved
female figurehead
commissioned by
shipowners and
lighthouse keepers,

with the likeness of
her muse, in her
honor, as she does
not get seasick on
poetic waves,
and she climbs the
ratlines with ease.

The next time we
see her, she will be
the 19th Century Muse,
where she will be a
riverboat pilot

where women begin
to make careers at

where in this era,
America's rivers
will be alive with
steamboats carrying
freight and passengers
to Cincinnati and
New Orleans.

Women are earning
ship pilots' and
captains' licenses,
taking the wheel

and Aunt Callie plays
the calliope on the
"floating theater"

why this author can
now 'showboat.'

Such a COOL poem of yours I discovered by accident. Do you think you were all those things you mentioned? I wish we could be really sure of your past incarnations...
Even if I "ain't sure what it means" I give the actually poetic verse in this one...uh, let's see... 5 stars!

Sage, your astute knowledge on so many topios leaves me stunned!
This is a wondrous poem! I'm also excited about your having wolves. How great is that!;-) I had a friend in Tahoe who had a few wolves and I wanted one so badly, but he told me it isn't right to have only one they are very pack oriented. They may go off alone for periods of time, but they always go back to their family. Besides I live in a place where they aren't allowed anyway! But I did get on well with them and loved their antics and how they are so respectful of each other.

Go Nordette! Girl power in a nutshell! Sage, I just want to say that I drizzle around this site, just agape at the depth, length and breadth of your awesome knowledge and understanding. I have deep admiration for such applied mental arithmetic and cerebral gymnastics that moves to the pulse of the absorbed written word. The gems and treasure which your work displays always leaves my mind and visionary sight impacted and me nodding in mental assent. Just awesome. Love this denouement, too. Thank you for bringing such a vivid dimension and tangible interaction to our pages. You is a rockin woman! TY Kate xx

For awhile there I thought you were writing about the City of New Orleans, and in a way, I suppose you were. I liked this, it stated some bragging facts in the guise of history/poetry/information, and THAT was good.
