The 1950's were full of discovery and fun. Big kids smoked cigarettes and we fought with our fist BUT never with a gun. It was a great time to be a kid. It was crazy all those goofy things that we did.

I was just 8 in 1958 but I remember big finned colorful cars and those big chunky chocolate bars.

I recall making hand-made scooters made from discarded milk crates

and riding on the back of the ice cream truck wearing metal roller skates.

I recall the cake man,

the corner candy store,

watching moves for a quarter

and so much more.

Bikes with streamers coming from the handle bars,

catching Japanese Beatles and putting them in jars.

Walking miles to the community swimming pool just to jump off the high dive,

watching folks on American Bandstand dancing to the "Hop" and the "Hand Jive"

A band-aid with iodine solved every cut and scrape,

becoming an instant super-hero with just a mask and an old cape.

Going to school dressed up with a shirt and tie,

attending church because the folks said so and wondering why?

Listing to people singing on a street corner singing

"Do whoop do whoop do."

This was an exciting time for me and I hope it was for you.

They truly were Fantastic, and I've often wished that I could live them again.
