How quickly we forget - around the world authoritarianism is on the March. Here in Britain we are trying to reclaim the national flag from the extreme right British National Party (the Union flag never looked better than when it was covering Geri Halliwell's bottom) and resisting attempts to erode civil liberties that are part of a twelve-hundred year old tradition. We must never forget what happened just over half a century ago in Europe.

People could not see deception,
people would not hear the lie,
they fell for the great seducer,
and sent millions to die.

The silver tongued one learned a trick
the world had long forgotten;
that people will believe your lie
if you tell it big and often.

Identify the evil ones
by dark skin and aquiline nose,
then blame them for all miseries -
that's how the seduction goes.

Nothing must taint the master race,
nothing must stand in the way.
Theirs is the world, teach them to sing
Tomorrow Belongs To Me,

while destroying homosexuals
and people of liberal mind.
To the seducer's true nature
those who followed were deaf and blind.

They listened to that dreadful voice
and were charmed and mesmerised.
"Whatever we do is right and just,
because God is on our side."

When that lie is repeated now
it still arouses deep fears,
it is the voice of Adolf Hitler
echoing down the years.
