Momma's Gumbo
I remember sitting on front steps Waiting for Sunday dinner. Food smells Drifting from open windows mingled With other food smells from Other dinners cooked by other Mommas after church. They traveled up the bayou On a Cajun breeze that made my Mouth water and fueled my eight-year-old hunger. My momma was making gumbo but down The bayou somebody else's momma Was making jambalaya. I took a good Long sniff and wanted to be wherever that Somebody was. But then Momma said The gumbo was ready and I forgot about Being somewhere else. 'Hungry' could do that. Funny how I never wondered then If there was somebody else sniffing Momma's gumbo and wishing they were me.

Awwwww, through the eyes of a child in retrospect. Food cooking anywhere always smells so good and brings out the appetite...
Be safe,

| How wonderful to recall smells (not odors) precious to us... food, or whatever. Food smells are best, and you surely brought back hungry ones for me; baking sweet potatoes, sweet potato pies, real fresh vegetable soup (like gumbo), and best of all for me, biscuits almost ready to eat... with butter and peach preserves. See what you've don? You've made me hungry enough to eat... again! Good writing here, too. - Bill |
