I wrote this on a scrap of paper in 2004 or 2005, and I found it yesterday while I was going through some piles of clutter. My original intent was for this poem to be lyrics for a song, but I don't have a keyboard and I never came up with a second verse.

I have battled major depression for years, and I wrote this during one of my peaks in this emotional rollercoaster. I had missed church for months because I didn't want to be around people, and somehow God gave me strength that day to go to church on a Sunday morning. I missed being there, and I was so excited about coming that these words came to me. Oddly enough, the song came into my head while the congregation was singing something totally different.

I can still hear the melody for these words, and I hope that I will be able to put them to music one day. In the meantime, please enjoy.

From the abyss I rose

Out of the dark murky deep

On my head landed soil and stones

But a steady pace I had to keep

When I made it to the edge of the pit

Jesus took my hand

Forget the mud on my feet

Iím back on Straight Street

And I wonít go back to that hole again

I wonít go back again

I wonít go back again

Iíve learned my lesson the hard way

And I wonít go back again
