I never saw laughter in the

eyes of my mother

though she could laugh out loud

I never saw real warmth in the

eyes of my mother

though she was caring well for me

I never saw content in the

eyes of my mother

though she had many reasons to

the scars of a difficult childhood

were stored deep inside the

eyes of my mother

the frustration of dreams dreamt

big but never fulfilled made the

look in her green eyes restless

a restlessness that made her move

the furniture around the house

all the time so it might impress

visitors as if it was new, for it was

hard on her to accept she was the

child of working class people and

she desperately tried to belong to

the 'middle-class bourgeoisie'

my father was a sweet soul and all

the time gave in to her

I defied her, so we clashed with often

a bitter taste as left over in my mouth

but when she finally made the cross over

to the Promised Land and I paid her a

last visit, she lay there with a peaceful

smile all over her face, so I believe an Angel

must have passed by to take her by the hand

It was the first time I cried for my mother

I didn't choose poetry, poetry chose me
