A sunny Sunday morning in Soweto

sitting in the shadow under a big tree

sipping ice cold ginger juice

families walking down the street

straight from church

happy children's voices filling the air

with laughter

my temporary neighbor and me talking

about the old and the new times

the changes, the hopes and also the dessilusions

his wife just passed away two weeks ago but

he's surrounded by a warm family making the mourning

more easy

and we're telling each other with a smile, this could be

an historical picture: a white grandma and a black grandpa

experiencing the quiet and the peace of a sunny sunday

morning in Soweto

sipping ice cold ginger juice

in the shadow of a big tree

I give him my book of poetry, he reads some lines aloud

then looks at me with a smile, telling me 'he's going to enjoy it'

it feels like I just received and award

I didn't choose poetry-poetry choose me
