Profiling

We all do it, so why deny that we do?

I don't like you and I know why,
that glint in your teeth,
or maybe your eye?

I'm not prejudiced, so it can't be,
your face or the color of your skin.

It must be the style of your hair,
or that cult that you're in.

I know it's a cult by that tattoo,
I know it's a cross,
but that's a cult, too.

It's probably because,
you tend toward the obese.

You're fat and you're lazy,
ugly, or any one of these.

I can tell by your face,
your criminal intent.

You live off of others,
and don't pay your rent.

I can see that you're uneducated,
by the clothes that you wear.

And all those piercings,
will get you nowhere.

And oh, by the way,
that car that you drive?

Wouldn't be caught dead in it,
even going to a dive.

I can tell by your teeth,
what drugs you are on.

People of your religion,
are committing mortal sin.

So don't talk to me,
you've got nothing to say.

Or I'll call the cops,
or blow you away.

Cuz you don't matter to me.
No matter what you do,

What will be will be,
and it’ll be on to you.

I loved this poem, I can tell you are a very serious man on the outside, but very sweet on the inside. The message you send to me.

Tattoos and drugs wont get you anywhere in life so stay strong and hold on tight.

The drugs and the teeth. Very smart. your a very intelligent man. very wise..

Ron,

You must live in Arizona or at least have heard about our controversial bill. They say there will be no profiling....bull. You hit the nail on the head and it should be send to lame brain governor. Profiling is already going on. Thanks for this poem.

yes we do all do this Ronald! This is a good pondering post about self & awareness of oneself. You bring up good thoughts too as to why...our intuitions have a gut response to things & the energy of others.

Just as we love people, or feel at ease with someone new & we don't know why we feel like we do, we go with it cause it "feels" right...so when there is a negative gut feeling I think it deserves recognition. It is a very primal instinct. It is to hard to ignore it's importance even if we don't know why...and this is not to support the breeding of ignorances or anything like that or any instilled upbringing people have in racist thoughts or prejudices. Those sorts of things are not gut feelings, our gut feelings don't see stuff like that...

I accept everyone Ron, t'is who I am. I do not ever expect to win a popularity contest. I am not here for that. It's like "Our Quilt" poem, all of us here would weave a beautiful one together. That is the beauty of being diverse :) Thank you for sharing this lovely poem with us, unfortunately many are judged.

Starbelly Sneeches - Dr. Suess. Ron, you have fleshed out the fine details of stereotyping and the presumptive nature of humans. You have illustrated how it becomes an imploding avalanche once launched and your implication of the harm done does not go unnoticed. I think your couplets have enveloped sensitivity, awareness, defensivenss, offensiveness and mushroom thinking based on the fear syndrome. Animals have it all over us in that "if you smell good, you're good. ~~ Diana

BINGO! Bang on the money, Ron, and so well put across. All too sad but true. My mother always used to shout at people in wheelchairs, as if she thought they were deaf. She didn't mean anything by it, it was just a kneejerk response. By enlarge, we just don't handle people's "otherness" at all well. xx

I think we are judgmental and it is part of human nature. Prejudices, sadly, and if we're honest with ourselves, are part of our beings. As long as we keep trying to overcome, we are at least headed in the right direction. Meaningful work! ~Best, Elizabeth

i agree we all profile and we're ALL predjudiced not necessarily strictly each other's race, religion or skin color...admitted or not. i see each of us invite 'profiling' by the choices we make in visually projecting our image to the world...

personally i find it difficult to check my immediate reaction(profileing) to people covered in tatoos and piercings which indicates to me they have no regard for their own body and avast array of other implications or when i see someone unable to walk without using one hand to hold up the crotch of their pants indicating to me that more than likely this person does not support himself unless he has some sort of one-handed work or an across the board disrepect for every person...my butt in your face whether you want to see it or not.

you better bet i profile!

Yes we all do it. So many first impression factors to choose from. It also a shame when we profile we often look for the negative rather than the good of what we see and apply it to the personality. Very thought provoking write, very in touch with reality.
