was living in tazewell, tennesee in summer of 1972 when observations of the "Southern life" and how it's changed sat me down to write this.

Davy Crockett's changed a little.
Now he sprouts a close-cut
crewcut n he wears a silk blue
tie over hisjeans and deerskin
boots.
Yes n he packs a .38 snubnose now sted
of the old wooden and iron flintlock
n drives a 1972 Olds instead of
whipping Betsy.

I'm thinking of one called "the
Wildman" with yellow-flecked green
eyes snarling a scream that's he's
a 'wild-blooded, sharp-shooting,
wildcat-loving, loudest,
hollaringest,taut-bellied, bear-
fighting rascal in the whole god-
awful damned town of
Lone Mountain, Tennessee

Ole Johnny's calmed down some since he
went to college n slipped corn
likker into the Dean's reception
party punch bowl;
He's left behind the intellectualisms
(maybe) n has drawn into mountain
mythologies, as etherally mystic
as they can be -- myths of manhood
acheived by violence n passion n
strength and blood and death --
myths of never showing tears or
loneliness or kindness 'cause men
don't do that; no, that don't do
that in
East Tazewell, Tennessee.

Johnny's a prize catch for any girl-
child preening her body for
security n lust under the
title 'missus' n the role of wife.
Doncha know he knows it n, between
the down-home boys n girls, he's
making a dangereous animal, no
trust in any but hisself.

'And who can ree-lee trust hisself?'
asks the W. C. Fields mirror image
or the worn-out smile of the pork-
fed ducky . . . 'we'n heah are real
men. Whooo-hah! We'n heah raise our
own plastic in
Head-O-Barren Creek, Tennessee
