Poetry by Liana Margiva

In the City of Angels the flowers don’t bloom
They are cut and they rest on the stone.
In the City of Angels the silence and peace
Broken only by birds’ cheerless songs.
In the City of Angels the rain doesn’t fall
It’s replaced by the tears that soak the earth.

In the City of Angels no one makes a noise,
And the laugh of the children is no longer heard:
All the children are resting six feet under ground
With a look of surprise still etched on their faces.

These are children of Beslan, Ossetian town,
Who’ve been murdered and burned in their  school.
Their own resting place in the burial ground
Called the City of Angels
Where three hundred  thirty four  souls rest in peace.

Whenever power is involved, there are always many innocents that suffer.
The imagery is so soft and powerful at the same time; I love the first two stanzas.

I pray for the children, I live for the children, and I cry for the children. But I know that one day, if not allready the children that rest in the city of angels, will be lifted on high to rest in peace in the City of God. Thank you for reminding us that our children, the worlds children will not have a future unless we preserve the present which makes the future possible! Peace may it never cease!!!

At first, I thought this would be about our own "City of Angels" Los Angeles, California USA (which is also a battleground).

Beslan, a town of about 30,000, is in North Ossetia, near the republic of Chechnya, where separatist rebels have been fighting Russian forces since 1999.

On 01 September 2004 terrorists seized hundreds of young students and others hostage in the Beslan town school. The armed militants demanded that Moscow free Chechen rebels. Hundreds of Russian troops had surrounded the school building as various other negotiators attempted to reason with the militants.

Some 330 people -- about half of them children -- were found dead after Russian special forces stormed the school. How they died and whether all of them were killed during the assault is unclear. More than 500 people remain hospitalized. But three days after the event, scores of people were still unaccounted for.

In such an ideological fight, why do they kill children? Such a horrible shard of history.

Liana,
This poem brings back those horrific memories of that fatal day. It shocked and disgusted all people to think that children would be a victim of such crimes. I cannot tell you how much this hurts me to know such terror exists in this world. I have given you a link to a website that is hope of victims and their families from this tragedy.
