they begin with quiet baby steps
down a road of sticks and stones
playing new songs on old guitars
singing with made-up voices
laughing with drawn-on smiles
they hide their memories away
like mime's with imaginary ladders
climbing rung after rung
but getting no higher.
these men you see before you
as they trek and trudge their way
facsimiles born from sand and wind
that dust-bowled our one yesterday.
these men who's songs are hummed
who are whispered after as they pass
these were the men in the Civil War
in Germany and France
in the Middle East, the Pacific
the ice cold days of Russia
the bitter scorch of the Sudan
these were the men during the Revolution
waving banners and beating drums
firing pistols and sixteen pounder guns
these men who march past in crude formation one time...our hope and salvation.

This is a a glowing tribute to the many who have fallen in the fight for freedom. Very emotional to anyone who has known war and fighing for the right reason.

Biting commentary on the human compulsion to believe in war despite the history of its failure to provide any permanent solutions to our most pressing dilemmas. Great thought-provoking write.
