Sandpiper

I hope this never comes true . I hope the lower price of gas doesn't stop the building of alternative energy sources. I hope...

Sandpiper

Walked the beach hand in hand
My granddaughter and me enjoying the sand
Carefree day set aside for enjoying
Nature and the sea breeze blowing

My offspring’s offspring looked ahead
Trembling, pointed out a mother sandpiper lying dead
At surf’s edge slicked with oil and limp without life
Her offspring darting, not willing to give up the fight

The baby sandpiper returned to her mother time after time
Looking for help and guidance on what to do with the slime
No longer white and the surf coating her black
She wanted her old easy way of life back

Crying my granddaughter ran to the little bird
As it slowed in its efforts, her cry could be heard
Caught up in my granddaughters arms
A questioning look on how such creatures could come to harm

She held up the baby sandpiper, now dead
In shame I bowed my head
For my apathy about off shore drilling
I drove my granddaughter away crying

Hateful that your little girl had to be so crushed, Liz. Thanks for having the fortitude to write it...Jerry

You bring us to this awful scene with your vivid imagery, Liz. I like the contrast of emotions in this poem; walking with your grandbaby in innocence, and then viewing the destruction of innocence. You seem to be "back" with this poem...maybe a bit? Hope so. You've been on my mind. Love and Hugs,
Sheila

Such a damning statement of our "evil oily" ways, Liz. Believe me. I know this from my fight with oil companies. Thank you. Love, hugs, and best wishes to you and to you grand daughter,

So very sad. And I hope our new leaders now pursue alternative energy, as they claim they finally will, or this horrendous scene will be repeated, over and over again, through your granddaughter's entire lifetime.

It is sad we often get so immune to so much talking about action for the defence of our environment that after a while our ears go deaf and our eyes go blind and perhaps it takes the children who will be the adults of tomorrow to renew our hope.

Wonderful sentiments and thoughts, but our fate I am afraid is in the hands of those that lobby in behalf of the oil industry. Maybe a little common sense and less greed would help too...

Be always safe,

This is very sad Elizabeth and is one of the best reasons to get off the oil bandwagon. It is a polluter. ~ Sara

This one hits in the heart - we, the little guys, have no say so in the matter. Those in charge make the rules ... heartbreaking!

Elizabeth,

In the beginning I felt your pleasure walking with your granddaughter.
But I had to cry at the end. Because although we hope it won't happen, we know it might. What are we doing to ourselves! This really touched me.

Perhaps the auto makers will give some further thought to their inventions now that they've been refused a government bailout. I hope too.

I asked my husband the same question yesterday...if the lower cost of gas would make the fight for alternative energy sources fly away...
