I've been struggling with this loss...

One Dog Is Okay, I Guess
Three dogs used to live in my home
Now Hermes and I reside alone
We were a happy, neurotically motley crew
And we were joined together, through and through
Before Milly and Willy were a mismatched pair
She was nine. He was three. They didn’t care.
The three of them would get out every now and then
They’d make it home safely again and again
Late one October night, they got out
Those three running away didn’t listen to my shouts
I figured they’d be back any time anyway
But much to my dismay
Only Hermes came back that night
Milly and Willy were stolen away
I searched but they were totally out of sight
Hermes and I struggle along
No more 3 dog nights at my home
Hermes cries out in his sleep
And me, I just weep

Wow, Liz, I'm sorry to hear of this. I have 6 of my own. I can't even imagine...

We had a runner, Clayton, a black lab. Had to watch him like a hawk. Both of our current dogs are now chipped so we have a fighting chance of recovery if they escape. There is little worse than the pain of one's lost dog. But......a 3 dog night is but 2 adoptions away. Patrick

I found this very moving, Elizabeth. It's like a page from your diary, sincere, emotional and written in verse. Well done, it makes me share the feeling.

Oh God,the pain and sadness when our best friends are gone in the blink of an eye. Always hurts when family members leave and never return because they leave an empty place in the heart. So very sorry and I have to admit, one of my biggest fears...

Be always safe,

So very sorry to hear of your loss; our pets become like a loving member of our family. Your inner feelings are so evident in this tender poem of animals lost in the dark of night, where only a coward would steal your dogs. You tell a heartbreaking story of Hermes crying out in his sleep... oh, so very sad. Beautifully written, Elizabeth. Joy L. Hale

So sorry to hear this Elizabeth. Maybe they wandered too far away and people took them in to care for them, not to hurt you.

Oh my, intimate and powerful poem!
I feel so badly someone was capable of stealing them from you.
The whole thing has to be just heart breaking.

I'm so sorry they are gone, perhaps Hermes needs a new playmate.

Once upon a time
I did have soulmates
a black and tan male
and white female
of the shepherd kind
You did capture my sadness
with yours...of me
losing the black and tan
within three months
then losing the white
grieving herself to death

Your loss is reflected in your words and yes I do believe pets feel the loss of other pets in the home as much as we do.

I can quite understand your feelings of despair. Too bad you could't have fixed it so they couldn't get out.
