The old woman Pushed the grocery cart along And cried. It was stones, She said, The stones Made pushing hard. "My stomach hurts From pushing Or pulling back On slants," She said. Two blocks farther on, I turned--not my block, But it bothered me, Seeing her strain, the way Her fingers clawed, Her frail, hunched shoulders worked To push an empty cart Along an unpaved street And cry. Now, too late, I chide myself. I should have asked How far she had to go. . . And why. Leslie P. Garcia copyright 2002
