Desert Waste

This is a poem simply describing the Sonoran desert landscape as I see it on a summer day in Phoenix.

Sun soaked desert waste,
A common bond, a common place.
Fatigue born of pain,
Lack of faith, misery, disdain.

Cracked, desperate, dry,
The same within, too proud to cry.
Devastated, alone,
Full of anger, cannot atone.

Windblown, moisture bare,
Fissured, bleeding, dying, despair.
Underneath is life,
only the surface shows the blight.

Spiny, prickly brush
Beneath it water flows, luscious
Sustaining parched seeds,
Feeding roots, traversing in keeps.

Defying crusted earth
Exposed, condemned, lying, no worth.
Disease infested,
Beyond boundaries, hatred vested.

Clouds appear, heat soars.
Century plants bloom to be no more.
Rain soaked desert waste,
Nature’s forces can recreate.

More than just a nature poem, you have touched on a human condition. Very descriptive and compelling.

On another subject, I just saw today again a picture of the desert close to the border, littered with thousands of black plastic bags left by people entering the country that way. It is sad to see the desert treated like that.
