This poem relates the situation between a friend and her husband when they parted.

Pretend that you don’t know her

 Pretend she—your wife--doesn’t exist

Pretend your paths never crossed

Pretend that she’s a past love you’ll never miss.

Never look back on all the two of you shared

Never take time to reminisce at all

Never remember that you loved her once

Never pick up the phone to answer her call.

Dream not of all the yesterdays you and she had

Dream not of the mutual hopes and sometime tears

Dream instead of much greener pastures

Dream that there’ll be no unwanted fears.

Hope for all that might be yours

Hope not for what might have been

Hope for a full satisfying tomorrow

Hope there’ll be no misery then.

Live entirely for yourself each day.

Live entirely for what you seek

Live entirely to fulfill your selfish aims

Live that you might never be meek.

Search diligently for your own happiness.

Search not at all for another’s peace

Search the whole world far and wide

For a new love to give you emotional release.

When you have pretended beyond pretense

That your life is really your own.

You will learn, my friend, that every day

You spend your life alone.

Profound insight relecting the mature wisdom that comes only with time and life experiences. But some never learn and go on speaking out about their bad luck and how "...nothing ever goes right for me."

I know of a person who acted like this. He wasn't very kind, even to his divorced wife. He remarried and died 2 1/2 years later. He wasn't alone but what did he gain. Not much happiness in his life. Just sickness and ill health. God has a way of making things come around that goes around. I know this to be true.

So much wisdom in this inspirational poem. Unless your marriage was terrible from day one, you should always be friends with the one you once loved.

Jeanette, many people believe the grass is greener on the other side, and some times the grass dries up and leaves them miserable. I think it is wise to remain friends after a separation because bitterness only leads to stress. I enjoyed this a lot!
