Abyss

In this poem I diverge from my usual writing. A rather melancholy piece...

Abyss

The deep chasms of man’s worldly plight
Webbing the valleys of the soul
Grasp wildly for a lifeline of hope
Material things toward a concrete goal.

The disconsolate man’s silly ploys and toys
Hobbies, books, television and such
Band aids for the minutes, hours, days, and years
Platitudinous pastimes to season the emptiness--untouched.

The labors of life, job, duties, responsibilities
The crutch that holds one up, character denied
Moving man through time mindlessly
Performance a habit in an empty vessel, soul died.

Feelings stored away in the cave of the mind
Anathematized for the pain they bear
A foolish eulogy of putting to rest
All life’s burdens, the end wrapped in a tear.

Everything seems so vain from a certain distance.
Effective composition, especially the second stanza,
in my opinion.

This is really sad!!! I know with the stock market plunge, some of my friends have lost their life savings. I'm saddened by what is happening to the whole world.

Having a lot of money which you count daily but not being able to hold it in your hands to count is a foolish mistake one much learn. The bragging when it's up; and defeated when it's down. This is greed!!!!! I've often advised my friends to invest upon something that will give a little but a sure thing of guaranteed income, but some would not take my advice.

Material things are just materials things, they are there for show, but people know with all that material things, you probably will have lots of debts to pay. Leaving beyond means is a torture to oneself, you always have to work to pay interest to others.

A good thought-provoking piece!!!
