My Vacation

My muse has neglected me lately and I've gone through one of those dry spells when words just didn't want to form into poetry. Yet, I wanted to share my joy of the vacation I took--the first in a while.

My Vacation

Miles and more miles we made plans  to travel
Tires singing on dry and rainy wet roads
Soft listening music playing on the car radio
Setting our expectations to vacation mode.

From sunny Florida to Savannah, Georgia
A two night stay amidst a court of moss covered trees
We strolled through the squares throughout the city
Viewing quaint old mansions; reminded of afternoon teas.

Then back on the road, our travels would take us
To Cherokee, North Carolina, nature at its height,
Mountain peaks protruding through cloud banks
Shades of blue sharing the sky; what a magnificent sight.

Did some gambling in the casino built by Cherokee Indians
Toured the quaint little shops filled with souvenirs
Enjoyed the restaurants in the valley of the mountains
Nature’s beauty so magnanimous as to bring awe-struck tears.

Three nights in Cherokee, the hub to places all around
We traveled through the mountains to Pigeon Forge
The ride nearly frightening with all the sharp mountain curves
Where cliffs fell hundreds of feet into a deep gorge.

Gatlinburg, Tennessee was my favorite city of choice
Where the balcony from the motel room
Hung out over a gurgling rock-strewn stream
I felt the glory of nature—and a total absence of gloom.

Then the wonderful trip came to an end
Time to go back home to the routine of daily life
Working on my book, enjoying my gardening
Thanking God for every day he gives me
that is free of strife.

Your descriptions took me back to a time when we were a young couple with a new son, and I was stationed in the army at Ft. Gordon, Ga. We made sure we visited all the sites including Savannah with the azaeleas in full bloom, and the Smokey Mountains of the Cherokees. Thanks for taking me back.....Jerry

Sounds like many visitors would like to explore the South as you have and marvel at its beauty as you have so aptly described. Now that your batteries are charged maybe that reluctant muse will come back and move your pen once again as it did in this marvelous descriptive poem.

What a great trip my friend, should've come on up to Kentucky, I'm only two hours away from Gatlinburg. I too love it there we are planning a trip sometime this summer. Next weekend my sister and I are going to the northern part of our great state and spending the weekend at Shaker Village. I am very excited about it, the inn that we are staying in has a history of being haunted. I'm glad you enjoyed the mountains of North Carolilna I love to got Cherokee as that is where my ancestors were traced to. I always feel at home in the Smokeys...much of where I live looks like the mountains there. It was good to read your wonderful work again, feels good to be back at the den and posting again. I am anxious to buy another book from you for my summer reading, not decided which one yet...but will before the weekend is over. I will have two new books out within the year...Faces in the Mountains, and a children's book A Path of Stitches...I am very excited about both, for now loving the summer vacation at home relaxing and enjoying my garden and writing here at the den. Great write as always my friend, enjoyed!
Blessings from Ky.
