Born with Blessings

I was thinking about my son's infancy when I wrote this poem.

Born with Blessings

Your first cry denoted blessings of life
Your little mouth worked with hungry greed
Then you enjoyed the sweet taste of milk
While hugged by a loving mama seeing to your need.

For years the family doted on all you said and did
Rocking, playing, singing, and talking to you
Doling out affections every night and day
Emotional riches and a storehouse of surprises, too.

You learned to toddle, fall down, get up and walk
Your little feet moving across the living room floor
Your hands discovering trinkets along your path
Like entering a spacious world through a magic door.

Then came nursery rhymes, stories, and baby books, too
Letters, numbers, and every learning game at the store
In preparation for kindergarten and then grade one
To motivate an eagerness for school and more.

Knowledge and learning offer growing self-esteem
Success at worthy attempts generates growing ease
Of self-assurance and self-reliance as you grow
Which will open the doors of life with your knowledge keys.

You are born into this world with many blessings
That lead, guide and prepare you for your independent life
Bringing you to manhood and maturity someday,
To start the process all over with your wife
For your offspring.
