A Reason to Pray

I have a friend who has dozens of sensitive buttons so easily pushed that sometimes conversation is radical. I kept wondering what put those buttons there in the first place, and my poem "A Reason to Pray" is my perception of why.

A Reason to Pray

In the course of a day in the workplace or the home
One’s mind absorbs the many physical and mental tasks
While emotions are ever prompted by remarks of others
That push buttons and causes them to wear stress like an ugly mask.

Their mental dialogue with self is a quarrelsome, bitchy rant
Fault-finding and criticizing people’s faults, downgrading their quirks
Feeding garbage to their brain, programming it with drivel
Not stopping to realize that negativism debilitates rather than works.

This is the devil’s work, taking God’s wonderful vessel
And filling it with worthless rubbish, drivel and trash
Turning a lovely personality that is otherwise replete with deep faith
Into a sick cauldron of dissatisfaction collected in an emotional cache.

Such is what can happen to us as we move through busy days
Sometimes too preoccupied to notice what we feel
Letting concerns, worries, disappointments, hurts, and such
Rub away at us like an emotional grinding wheel.

We have left our emotions open to bitter influences all around
Have let negativism creep into our lives and rob us of peace
Until we are a bundle of nerves, wrought with ill temperament
That allows no positive thoughts for blessed release.

It is called programming the mind with external influences
Absorbing the back draft of bad attitudes and personalities in your sphere
Assimilating the negative influences all around you
Until the mind is so negatively charged that joy and happiness disappear.

When we are too unhappy to get out of bed of a morn
And there’s nothing in life that seems to relieve us of our mental load
We humbly turn to God and Jesus, our Saviors, in prayer
Looking for answers and a return to what God has bestowed.

Do we speak ill to God like, “I hate that miserable so and so?”
Or do we turn a humble mind that is open to change and solutions?
We know the miserable negativisms hasn’t worked for us; thus,
Reprogramming our negative thoughts is the key to resolutions.

So why do people pray when they are depressed by a problem?
They pray because their brain is oppressed by negative thinking.
The brain is a human computer operating system for the body,
When it gets out of order it needs reprogramming with positive rethinking.

So that is “A Reason To Pray”

Spiritual and wise, Jeanette. I often think that we create half if not more of our own problems by the way we think.

I appreciate the philosophical point of view that you have shared here, Jeanette. Thank you. Love and blessings to you,

I've heard it said that we are what we think. And "A Reason to Pray"
gives us a very thoughtful approach on what to do about it when we don't like what we think and how our negative thinking affects our behavior.

I like how through this poem you've given us a way by "reprogramming" to take hold of our lives and float a ship that appears to be sinking.

"A Reason to Pray" is another work by you, Jeanette, to offer very practical and helpful tips in meeting the challenges of life.

With respect,
Richard

I think you are right. People who don't like their innerself can find fault , dissatisfaction and be angry for many different reasons. It comes out in many ways and those around them suffer abuse in one way or another. There are always underlying causes tho and its good if they can be faced. Sadly that doesn't happen often..The power of prayer helps if its used!..M

This is spiritual and insightful, Jeanette. Makes me think about the degree of my own negativity. Nicely penned.
