The Miles We've Trod

Just a thought this morning...as I sat watching the skies open up and the rain pour down....I took this picture on the way home from Tennessee...as the Kentucky mountains came into view...

The Miles we’ve Trod

We dream about them when we’re but a child
write them down as we grow
fill our fantasies with visions
of what our future does behold.
Often forgotten but only for a while
busy with dates and socializing
and finding our place
in this big world we call home.
Discovering pleasures we never did know
disappointments come
and we exist
as we continue to grow.
Often we feel that we only take up space
back on track once again
dreaming the dream
fighting to win
as we run this lifelong race.
Complete and feeling proud
we linger as we reflect back
upon the desires, dreams, and visions.
Now reality, accomplishments, life
we think about the miles
the miles we’ve trod
water beneath the bridge
the bridges we did burn
seems so far away
a lifetime ago….never to return.
Giving advice to others
helping them find their way
smiling with satisfaction
yet, momentary fear
wondering what’s down the road…
what new dreams
is there time
as the finish line draws near…
what does life have in store?
How many more
times will we stumble?
Get up, dust ourselves off
start again
how many
pats on our back
if any…
visions we continue to dream
joy, heartache, peace, and strife
helps keep us alive
how many more milestones?
In this continuing cycle
the cycle…we call life…

How many more milestones Joyce? Countless. It seems everywhere we turn, just when we think the journey is over, up comes another milestone telling us we're not even near our destination. So the journey of life continues and for some they just seemingly breeze throught it while the others have a flat or ran out of gas. OMG Joyce I could write a book just on this subject alone. Not to mention the other ones in the poem too. Thank you for making us think about ourselves and the journeys in life that we take.

May the Lord Jesus bless you, and those whom you love, and who love you, and be with you always, and at your side constantly. With much love in my heart, joy to the world, peace on earth, & ((((((((((MANY WONDERFUL SISTERLY HUGGGGSSSS)))))))))), your little sister, Barbie.

Such contentment in this write, Joyce. I love the sage realism and thankfulness married together in your voice. And long may your journey's course continue to take you, to all the new and fresh places you've yet to call "home"! A life well-lived and well-loved. Bless you, Kate xx

You could have call it, "reflections of a peaceful soul" because the serenity of it all fills the picture background with some mist to cover back us, the bridges that we did burn.

"The Miles We've Trod" is a beautiful classic write that reflects the lives of the majority. I was recently in Tennessee and saw those same mountains in the background, that long stretch of road that made me think similar thoughts of all the miles I'd trod in my trip through life. A great write, Joyce, and after reading your book "Kentucky...the Mountains I Call Home" I've fallen in love with your poetry. All your poems are truly worth reading.

Oh, how well I feel the message of "The Miles We've Trod," dear Joyce. Perhaps I'm selfish, but now working on my 77th year on Dear Old Earth, I find myself working with what I surmise is a "short calendar." And yet the more miles I trod, the more I feel engaged with wanting to do more. Maybe I've just been stimulated by so many wonderful and interesting things in life that it's building up to some sort of personal critical mass. I simply don't have time to do all I want to do and enjoy doing.

Life has been a fascinating journey. Not all has been good, but the good certainly outweighs the bad. It's been a privilege from God to have had the opportunity to experience life. I hope that I'm learning enough so that when God calls out to me, "Come in," I'll be prepared for my future work in the House of God.

"The Miles We've Trod" has been enjoyable to read and has prodded me to think a lot about my past, and it has also encouraged me to keep my eye on the road ahead knowing the best is yet to come!
