Gone Forever

We would like to think love is forever: often it isn't.

The echo of your voice
is now a whisper,
endless passing years
pushing me further and further away
from the memory of your essence.

The vision of your image
at times so close
so real
so absolute;
I reach
into the dimension of the apparition
to find you and bring you back into my arms.

You stand there
emerging from the darkness
like a ray of sunlight
forcing its way through a layer of obscuring clouds.
I want
to resurrect your consciousness,
to reincarnate the animation
that danced in my arms that night in June,
when rings were exchanged
vows made till death do us part
and promises made that our love
would be like no other.
We cast ourselves off -
leaving the world of anger and hate far behind.

But today
all that is in my arms
is the reality that you are gone forever;
that I will never again touch the softness of your flesh
nor feel the warmth of your entangling embrace,
nor react to the searing passion of your loving and exotic soul.

Now you are…
…gone forever!
