This poem is about a person who has lost someone; their life has turned inward into depression and use of stimulants to ease the pain.

Silence Numbs The Pain

Dust drifts like snow
on the pictures
of a long lost love,
the floors creak
like footsteps in the night,
a dark spirit roams
through the crevices
of my life
once a painting
hung sweetly
on the walls
of a house
where laughter echoed
now replaced
by the haunting cries
of a ghost not there,
another sleepless night,
another pill,
another drink -
a puff of smoke
clouds the sight
of loneliness,
silence numbs the pain
of living,
when nothing can be heard,
nothing's said,
lost are the sounds
of humans being,
embers dying,
scents of burnt wood
emit through the cracks
in the ceiling of my mind,
another pill,
another drink -
a puff of smoke
fills the void,
cries the night nevermore,
ever present
as light falls
from the eyes of a stranger,
silence numbs the pain,
my pain, your pain,
turns to dust
the images of sanity gone,
a dark spirit roams
the ghost not there
the pills take away
the pain of living,
the drink
swallows me whole,
the smoke settles to silence,
silence numbs the pain.

hmm, this is a must read. for all us know someone who has chosen this path. i understand why people choose this way to escape. i chose words instead and am much better off i am sure. whether they were my own or others, that was my solace to inner pain. thanks so much for sharing these words.
