Attempting to deal is a tough game.

It is the terrible midnight,
the time between total dark
and the triumph of light,
that is the light that is promised,
the light that is hoped for.

For nothing hurts
like the loss of hope,
this steady knowledge
that the mistakes of the past,
what cannot be changed,
transfixes the future of love,
regardless of efforts made.

Yes, nothing hurts
like the loss of hope,
knowing the others
who have loved you
are relieved you are gone,
that nothing can serve them better
than to have you
absent from their lives.

Lord, nothing hurts
like the loss of hope
in the familiar face
staring from a looking glass,
the life-drained eyes,
with the familiar tear lines,
lost in old laugh krinkles,
but laughing little any more.

Come soon light,
the devil's in the door,
whispering over and over
that nothing hurts
like the loss of hope,
the loss of hope.

I hesitate to tell you what I thought as I was reading this, but I have to tell you anyway. I thought, "Oh my God, how did he describe my worse pain so well?" I think you kicked that devil back out the door, because, from your writing, I can't imagine that you can be down for long.

Sad and poignant, y e s. But your poem, and the sensitivity and
discipline that helped create it, inspire!! Some things that we
hope for -- yes, and some people -- disappear from our lives [got the scars to prove it, right?), but you have just proved that
hope springs eternal! Sorry about using that overused expression,
but. . .it really does. Love and Peace. . .Here's to a more
hopeful tomorrow!! Always, and Then, 'Pea'

Nothing hurts like the loss of hope - how so very sadly true that is, my friend. And this is quite a powerful piece.

Very poignant sentiments, Jerry. The reader cannot help but be taken into that "space." Love and peace to you,

Oh my, kindred spirits indeed.
Hope lost equates to a life in hell.
We can't turn that clock back, but we sure can rewind it....

Jerry, this expression of a mood coloured by experience touches the can empathize. The loss of loved ones, the loss of hope...your call for light in itself gives hope for relief.

all the best,

Right on, Jerry. This poem is sad without being full of self-pity. A universal place. Maybe "Come soon light" will mean that those who have loved you will do so again someday. Blessings, Kathy
That would be their loss Jerry not yours, Bless you!Jasmin Horst

Jerry, a very sad and heartfelt glimpse of a place where everyone has been, at one time or another. I really felt this one.

OUCH! This one hurt clear to my heart... When there is no hope, there is no light. I have been in that place where others who loved me were glad I was gone... what a lonely, lonely place that is! (Wrote a poem about it too... "InkBlots")

Powerfully penned & poignantly written!

Excellently penned - when hope is lost, we are lost - thought provoking sadness in these lines. Well done.
