November, a month of the fall harvest,an attempt to capture of the feel of yester-life.

Under the suddenly searching,

silver bright light,

the tree silhouette outlines

of a November rising blue moon

above the green fogged pools of the creek,

the softly plodding giant hooves

turning the powder

of crop road

brown-gray rubble dirt

sound soothingly to

the slumbering man

behind the big draft horses

on the heavy laden wagon

where he sinks in a bed

of husk-covered corn ears,

pungent, sweet, ripe odors

penetrating the night,

the little tri-colored terrier

cuddling under his arm,

ears alertly forward

to protect the master

against the black forms

of fox and owl,

the squeals and crush

of leaves in the dark,

and the reins are in

the lightly touching grip

of the warm body next

to his, the woman,

her own chin nodding

down as she whispers,

“poor old dear,

you worked so hard today,

picking this corn by hand,

poor old dear,

next will come the binding,”

her voice turning to soft snore,

and the horses move

through the early harsh chill

of coming-soon winter

along, away home,

they know the way,

the snorts and vapors

of the bay and the gray

with the breath of the earth

in and out around them,

soft life, harsh life,

surrounded by love

for those who work the land,

in and out the wind of the earth,

soft life, harsh life,

the spirit of the living soil gripping,

deeper and deeper the sleep

in and all around them,

the moon glow high above them,

content with labor,

content with love,

the Almighty smiles around them.

Your poem is imbued with rich imagery. I think the thing that I loved the most about this poem was the way you used so little punctuation and no stanza separation. Your use of those tools made the reading of your poem seem like the mist of early morning hours that hovers and winds its way around the shadows of all who trod therein.

You're a master, Jerry!

Your imagery and entire rendition of this symphonic poem is breathtaking, Jerry. Fine, fine work! Love and peace to you, friend,

As I read these words, I cannot help but imagine the lives of my Amish neighbors - it's as if you've written them an anthem, a love song, a tribute. This poem warms my heart and puts me in the skin of old Mr. Troyer whose farm waits for me beneath a white wind mill every evening on my walk. I see him, his big, beautiful draft horses and his dogs, Ranger and Lucy, as he worked the fields this past fall. And, I recall his wife in bonnet and long apron picking me a baker's dozen ear of corn in thanks for the purple mums I brought for her one day. Beautiful writing, Jerry.

The comfort of doing a ritual task with horses, dogs and his woman all know their parts. A slice of Americana. Thank you for sharing. Serenely beautiful. Liz

Sibilant 's' gives this poem its soft, slushy, dreamy autumnal feel
and the natural images are exceptionally well realised; warm and real.
