The contemplations of winter's short days by the fire arouse memories of those gone before and the benefits of our Creator's care. Consider Paul's insight: "Now we see through a glass darkly."

You are gone,

but I am here

in the great

alone of life,

eyes fogged

by the blinding warp

of the mirror imperfect,

of this our only known,

unique existence,

not seeing through

to life ever after.

And what am I to do,

but be alone, so alone,

with no place to go

except into the light

of that warp,

my understandings,

continually refractions,

lest I choose

fumbling but not living

in the longest

night of darkness,

the suffering black

of disbelief and mourning?

For He holds out His hand,

and gives me leave

to choose

to the end of this life,

and then again,

for He is the essence

of abiding mercy,

as in this alone,

the alone

of weeping desperation,

I have pressed my nose

to the mirror,

and reveled in

the blessing of

His soothing contemplation.

I said your poetry always makes me smile, but I lied... This one didn't make me smile, but rather made me cry. It is stunningly beautiful and full of raw soul. The last stanza just... well, it is perfection to me.
Thank you for sharing your gift with us, Jerry.

With a sigh, I admit I relate to the lamentation more than the comprehension -- at times. John Flanagan et al commented very well already, so I'll leave it at that.

Jerry, this is stunning ~ I want to read and read again. This is a classic no matter the period. Your spirit gleams through your words and your style is impeccable. Your connecting strands between each stanza bring a holism that is made that much more complete and poignant by your knowing when to stop. Your timing is perfect. I think this may be my new favorite of yours, Jerry. Just amazing!

The first two stanzas paint dark and see dark with no denial of reality, just the truths of our condition and what and who we are; in the third stanza the change of mood is uplifting and inspirational, not a reliance on a crutch but a spiritual depth of understanding.
To return to the opening..."...in the great alone of life, eyes fogged by the blinding warp of the mirror imperfect,..." are lines and words of such great beauty they haunt, and I'm jealous, I wish they were mine.
Jerry, this is a very fine piece of writing.

Allowing God to wrap his arms around you makes the hurt subside and give reason to rejoice and continue marching forward. God bless...
