A Babe to Protect

December 24, 2010
By Rose Marie Rideout

A Mother holds back the tears,
Afraid of where her little boy will go.
Afraid of the things he’ll see & and resent,
Most of all will he always be this child so innocent.

He stands tall and proud in his uniform.
Does he realize where he is on his way too.
Have they fully prepared him in a short while
Of the things he may have to see & do.

She puts her arms around him and whispers,
I love you for all you are dear.
When you feel lost & alone,
Think of me, I’ll wipe away the fear.

Months go by and not a word,
One day the mailman stops at the gate,
Word has come of his return,
No protection for a Babe, It’s way too late.

It’s Christmas Eve and peace should be,
Among all God’s children thankfully.
We pray for many with no regret,
There’ll’ always be our  Babe to protect.

So true, Rose, and all the more heartbreaking for it. It's what I think about all the time: each one a mother's son. It's probably true that words about "mother" are often the last on every fading soldier's lips: so much WW1 poetry speaks of this. Thank you for all your love and care this past year and may 2011 continue to sow good things into your ever-giving heart and soul. You're a treasure! :)) xx

The only problem I have with the US military is it is now volunter. So these kids know what they are getting into. That does not mean I do not support our troops, because I do. Excellent write, Rose.

This made me cry Rose. They're always our babies no matter the age and for one to have to go to fight a war in another country is this mother's worst nightmare.
Peace and Love,
Marcia

This has been so since the start of time. Everyone is someone's child. So sad so many are lost in these horrible times since the start of time.
Very warm and thoughtful poem,my friend.
