The unforgettable heartache of lost love

                              Only Regret

(Authored and Recited by Richard Lee Orey

Our days began with stolen glances
                                                                              Touching fingers and smiles
                                                                              Beating hearts and sunset walks
                                                                              That carried us for miles
We watched the moon and all the stars
                                                                              Together we dreamed of life
In a shiny wondrous world of love
That would never know of strife
I held you in my arms
As you lived within my heart
There was no way to separate
                                                                              Or ever grow apart
For all the times we shared
                                                                              And together what we felt
There was no other way to live
With the cards that we were dealt
There was no one else for me
                                                                               O, how could I forget?
                                                                              I never saw another
                                                                              Yet now there's only regret
Time and life sent us far apart
But I dreamed of you each day
I planned a life with just us two
There could be no other way
Still I turned my head and strayed in thought
                                                                               As another came into view
And stole your heart away from me
                                                                              Before I even knew
There was no one else for me
                                                                              O, how could I forget?
                                                                               I never saw another
                                                                               Yet now there's only regret
So if a love should come to you
As a strange and lovely fact
Don't take your gift for granted
Get on your knees and act
There was no one else for me
                                                                                O, how could I forget?
                                                                                I never saw another
                                                                                Yet now there's only regret
                                                                                I never saw another
                                                                                Yet now there's only regret

Regret that is not from the surface, but from deeply felt love, pain...
Yet, at some time one needs to forget and keep living. But before, there is a time of doubt and fear, for sure.

Richard, I love the rhyming meter of your poem as much as the words--they could be songs and your wonderful speaking voice adds so much emotion to them. You are a truly amazing poet--you touch my heart with each poem you write.

All the best!!
