Go to:'Underground', by Goya's Child (1), copyright, Irvine, Y.T, Thorpe, O'Neil and Mannix 1991. This video recorded live at the Golden Vine Hotel Bendigo, 1993.
The original impetus for this song arose with as fairly common youth culture epiphany these days - the self-conscious notion, in 1991, that as artist musicians we belonged to a subversive and creative underground culture/group. It's also a song about the idea of confronting/facing up to the unconscious - to memory, repression, hurt, submerged and hidden stuff of the soul - but also to the transpersonal possibilities of 'being in fullness' as the existentialists might put it. The mood of the song is chthonic and thus the images and video footage I've selected here traces a continuity of 'underground' shamanic and neo-shamanic explorations going back 5,000 years in the UK .... The shaman/healers of a tribe (like the 'Heroes' of world mythology generally) confront the spectre of'death' in their undergound travels ... rather, to put it psychologically, 'death in life'. The footage was shot earlier this year in the American South-West and in the UK at the time of the Summer Solstice. On that particular morning I stood with thirty thousand others keen to see the sun peak through the clouds to miraculously touch the huge megaliths of Stonehenge. Enjoy the link!
Please note: given the song 'Underground' was recorded live at a gig the sound quality of that aspect of the video is 'pre-digital' ... Apologies in advanceI
More about Goya's Child - mostly Goya'sChild (2) info and material at present - i.e. 1994-199 after I'd left the band - (though some material up there was played by GC 1) Also features a useful band bio/history and other band memorabalia stretching from 1991 to 1998.. The site will grow in coming months and more GC 1 material (much of it unfortunately involved 'pre-digital' recording) will go up plus an exhaustive summary/discography concerning all songs by both GC (1 & 2) from 1991 to the present (over fifty hihg quality numbers). You can also watch GC2 videos - many connected to the movie Freedom Deep. Enjoy!
"Goya's Child were probably the most haunting 90s alt rock band you never actually got to listen to ..."
