Dedicated To My Precious Joli, Who Will Always Have My Heart

Picture Of Joli Taken By Me

The Old Bitch
By La Belle Rouge

she ran with the puppies, swift enough
to catch a butterfly between her paws
those short, little, back legs have often
danced for joy at the arrival of family
or the promise of a well-earned treat

she wrestled with her brother who was
twice her size, won the match because
she was agile, quick, completely fearless
her little head holds a brain of substance
within her wee chest beats a large heart

she had more than one old dog pursue her
smitten by the magic of soft brown eyes
her amorous scent attracting attention
she birthed sweet babes in stoic silence
and raised them all on mother’s best milk

she was quite a bitch in her young days
she took care of herself and her family
no gray in her curls, no limp in her walk
no nonsense tolerated from other bitches
she didn’t pick or run away from fights

she lies in the swing in spring sunshine
and watches the puppies of other moms
dancing on hind legs, running, wrestling
she’s earned her rest, love and respect
and the right to occupy her mistress’s lap

while she sleeps her legs race in place
is she chasing dream, summer butterflies
or racing her brother for the food bowl?
to some she’s just an old bitch now
but she’s still the queen of my heart

A sweet poem for a deserving sweet old girl. I'm reminded of my cousin's poodle, Tawny, always caught balls on the up bounce with such speed and skill. She mothered many puppies, but remains the one in my heart still.

Joli, such a charmer. You have written of your prized pet as only a proud owner can do. I feel as if I know her! She must be a delightful lap full, cuddling up to her mistress who is quite taken by her. I love this, Belle!
