... Know how he operates --- ....
Image (c) 2005, Karla Dorman
|
Winter grins his chilly smile
as he decorates the window
with icy patterns. He would
nip the nose, if I were brave
enough to step outside, but
I'm not a fool. He thinks he
can entice me with a shiny
bauble, diamonds sparkling
in the sun --- nothing doing,
Jack. He's just hoping I'll
go out onto the porch ---
can see it in his eyes. Oh,
I get it: there's a fall just
waiting to happen, one with
my name on it, isn't there??
Know how he operates ---
collecting broken bones like
candy, uploading the best
spills to You Tube. I'm not
ready to be the star of the
next viral video: he's going
to have to find another to
play that game. Not going
to be me. I'm staying in,
where it's warm. AND safe.

I didn't quite get viral video, as you're talking mainly broken bones, but that's ok. I'd end it with "play that role." Or "assume that role." I'd leave the rest off; it's already known. At any rate, I like this. Avoiding being the victim of the wicked Jack! I've fallen so many times it's ridiculous. That's probably why my brain is so weird. I love the part of uploading your accidents to YouTube. Everything is fodder these days, isn't it. That's the real wickedness. Let's share it with the world, aha! Thanks, Karla, for warning us once again about that devil, Jack. often, because the frost or snow are beautiful, i just stay inside and take pictures from there. Ok, be warm and safe! julie

Loved this, yes, it's a little nippier up there above me, yet I am new this year so my blood has not yet thinned for it to bother me. The cold rain left in the back yard on my bare feet reminded me that cold water is cold water none the less. And even with flurriers threatened I am not sad for this is nothing like the north. Though I will watch out for slippery pavement also. LadyJ

Karla,
I don't envy anyone winter conditions,...but in a way I do; yes the threats are there but also the beauties and the stillness. Love how you write this and the personal atmosphere it creates and evokes.

I know what you mean, Karla! I suffered a terrible fall one December not so long ago and believe me, I was very tentative on my long nature walks after the month-and-a-half-long recovery! Actually, it's not the long, beautiful wintery walks that are the most dangerous, it's the slippery porch steps and walkways that'll getcha! My husband and daughter make fun of me now when they watch me hunch way down on bent knees holding the railing with white knuckles figuring the lower I get, the less it'll hurt if I fall! One day, I even scooted down the stairs on my backside just to be sure! Sending love and safety, Gina

Jackie Frost visited my for the first time this year this morning. Yet nothing too drastic and he put on a spectacular show! But the tinker has his ways, too... the unsuspecting slippery stone... the less-than-rock-solid mud. It's my finger-tips he always bites, rather than my butt (more's the pity!) Like you, I prefer to pay my respects from the RIGHT side of the window glass when the temperatures really plummet. Time for some whisky in your oatmeal! :)) xx

Very, very cute and entertaining poem, Karla. I so remember the unbearable heat of Chicago's summers and unlivable cold of Chicago's winters, so like Texas. "Broken bones" indeed.
