A warrior sings his death song.

Father
I feel the bullet slam into me
I fall to the ground but there is no pain
It is a mortal wound
Today is a good day to die

Father
My blood spills onto the plains
I have lived well
I have fought well
Today is a good day to die

Father
I will soon be walking in the Spirit world
Joining the Old Ones who have gone before
I hear their voices calling, calling
Today is a good day to die

Father
I do not have much time
The darkness draws near
But I am not afraid
Today is a good day to die

Father
Do not be sad
I hear the voices of the Old Ones
Their voices are getting louder
Today is a good day to die

Father
I sing my death song now
I have fought well and die a warrior's death
Tell Mother not to cry or to forget me
Today is a good day to die

To read this after the death of your father now in 2008 is so heartwrenching to me. But it was a good write for you in 2003.

Karla, you have an inate sense of things that you've never experienced. Truly there is no pain when a person is shot. Of course, the rest of this excellent poem is equally astute. ~~Bonnie Q
