EMPTY ROOM
December 13, 1996
By: Jeffrey W. Bennett

Bare walls, telling no stories

as if sworn to secrecy of all they witnessed

No decorations to remind us of home

afraid to warm lonely hearts

Not wanting to provide comfort

Knowing their visitors would leave

empty; lonely

Knobs turn, switchs click,

lights come conveniently to life

but just as easily quenched when service ends

Solitary coffee pot sanitized after each use

no stains to leave clues or familiarity

wiped clean; a reminder of cold intrusion,

a septic memorial

TV forces company; a one way conversation

no relationship forged; no commitment made

Covers turned down the quickly remade

plastic cups for convenient disposal

Scant wardrobe space facilitating suitcases on display

The only familiarity is the reminder of a short stay.
