Held hostage then thrown to the wolves
Over and over again
Like in a reoccurring nightmare

Her predicament was an unbending quagmire
Of insincerity and deceit

Detained by disingenuousness smiles
Frantically planning
To captivate her dynamic longing
To climb over the crowd she was akin to
Anchoring their belongings to her skin

Even in sheep’s clothing
She was covered in an delicate glow

Even in flashbacks of happiness
She appeared sad and detached

Even in fleeting moments of lucidity
Everything appeared as a haze of troublesome inquiry

Designed to distract and debilitate
Her daily desire
To dissolve her dilemma
Detaching her from the dullness of their dreams

She was like a child lost in the wilderness
Where only shadows of footprints lived

Her only escape was to surrender
Into the trail where no one returned

Only her smile lives on

Only the memory of her voice
And the charm of her presence
Rustles through the wind of distant leaves

When I first clicked on this poem, I was expecting to read a story about a person named "distant" who left. Now that I've read it, I see I was partially right. Only instead of distant leaving, life left distance. Does that make sense? ~ Sara

I hate to see anyone in such desperate straits when death seems more attractive than life. We need to pay attention and save those whom we can.

... Sounds like a fairytale: Babes In The Wood or all those others with Wicked Stepmothers and Unscrupulous Uncles. Or a bit Kipling, like Mowgli's Jungle. Unlike this tale, though, most tragic heroines seem to survive in Brothers Grimm, dramatically released by some KISA (Knight In Shining Armour!), but looks like the Grimm Brothers possibly thought they'd won the day here... Yet in her "surrender" was escape. I would like to think she was simply translated, like a character from one of Ovid's Metamorphoses. The spirits of children always go on to grow elsewhere, leaving their magic behind. Enchanting, Jude. TY K xx

Ah...but she poured plaster of paris in her footprints, the quick-setting paste captures her memory in a timeless sculpture placed on the trail in the autumn, why the leaves turn colors in her honor...colorful and wild female archetype...

Your insight into this character is compelling. It is certainly good when we can see it for what it is and then move on; remembering only the good. Too often the ugly hangs on for too long. Tremendous write Robert!

Pain and disappointment can take their toll on the heart, leaving it empty, cold and numb. Fear of repeating the past takes her into the darkened corners of her soul where no one lives and all dreams die. This poem, though sad, is spot on, Jude.
