i was walking in the rain today,
my umbrella waterlogged

torn with holes making it useless

i was about to toss it into the garbage
then the rain stopped,

and the sun reappeared
though frayed openings
permeating its peforated fabric
below spreading clouds

no longer feigning
to protect my head and body -

the sky transformed
into blue polka dots,

the black umbrella
partially remained opened
in a rusty trash pail -

from now on, i’ll remember
to carry a folded raincoat in my back pocket,

to hell with umbrellas

of course, when the sky darkens
and the slicker is a pain in the ass
from carrying around,

it simply won’t rain

but I’ve grown accustomed to being teased
by drops of sky and partially wholly clouds

I can relate here. Just got a new umbrella for walking the dogs in the rain. I think I use it more for them than I do for myself. This poem is life in motion. Well done:)

LOL!! :)) I know how you love a good Gene Kelly rainstorm, Kartero. But the old "slicker" might provide a whole lot more useful coverage than a breached psychic umbrella when fleeing the assault of those unwanted polka dots of sky (even when they might desire to flood you in order to cleanse and soothe). Think Auguste Cot would approve anyways! xx

Sounds as though mother nature is having a little fun with the blue polka dots. I find this this uplifting myself as rain is one of my favorite things.
Good to be back and reading you again Jude.

This is a really cool poem. The only time I know for sure that it will rain is when my favorite baseball team is in the process of a pulling off a major upset and it's the third inning.

Teased eh? Like a day in the life here.
It tickles me what can muse the poets mind.

to hell with umbrellas

I decided that long ago; I feel strangely free now, like my dogs.

I guess that is the difference in peoples makeup, Jude, I hardly ever carry my umbrella "in case of rain." Actually, like Amber, I love the weeping of the sky.

So Jude you go to the dollarstore and buy one of those Ponchos that fold up the size of an envelope, no problem, don't you know it is when you aren't prepared it always rains. A great write Jude.

First, let me say that I love the title of this poem. It seems that it would be a great challenge to have people write a poem with that title and see what it would become. The poem is great, so human and so everyday life. No matter what we prepare for, chances are that life will throw us a curve ball.
Take care,
Sherry

Jude, I prefer to walk in the rain, getting lost in it's scent and cleansing ability...I do get wet quite often, but my body and soul just drinks in it. Next time, just let the rain fall and see what it is like to really take a walk in the rain. I love that you ended with a bit of humorous lines, perhaps looking through those holes you can see with new vision and insight. It is with much peace, love, and light that I send to you this evening..Love to read you again. you have been missed.

Amber "V" :)
