Footsteps lurk unwelcome in the hall
Wind sighs through the shade of the sun
Early shadows creep over the table

How many summers make enough
Questions swirl unbidden from the wings
Answer themselves dissolving

Machines pointlessly hum to each other
Rainspill trickles on the cold side of the wall
One nuclear word silently eludes

Moments scattered scarcely felt or seen
When did last year’s autumn pass?
Where to focus, where to go?

Dissolving on, shadows lift and fall
Across timespill words fall truly short
Where all are echoes of echoes

Though some, like Bonito, surge free of
The great sea of all of it, and hang
A moment flashing, before falling, lost

Rare others fill me like a sail
All embracing mirage of consummation
“Carry me to her” – the dreaming plea

But the stubborn rock refuses the ocean
And the daffodils, never looked sweeter
At the clash of roads I stand and wait

For no turning away would suffice
Old answers no longer apply
The high soliloquy of the wind beckons

The smoke of an old fire bends away
