The death of Odin bears a striking resemblance to that of Christ, which it predates. The painting was commissioned by Hettie Rowley for The Aquarius Key which touches on this much ignored fact...

A Vision of Christ and Odin

Scattered, glistening shards of lonely shattered souls

Lie strewn across the velvet-ebony halls of time

Cracked voices shriek and pierce the sky in blood red pain

As darkness presses hard, and wildly pounds thy heart in vain

Another rain of broken souls across heaven’s corpse doth rain

And bitter-sweet, the laughter of thy God winds thee up in bloody chains

And nails thee to the cross his sons once graced

And commands thee now respect the laws thou hast disgraced

Far, far away through time and space thy vision flees through blood

And upon a lonely hill before the dawn, espies two souls in agony full wrought

Beneath the rising orb of dying sun

Their glory in their deaths foretold and spun

The one for peace in halls of warriors long dead doth cry

For blessed Valhalla far beyond the mourning of the West

Behold the agony of Odin nailed upon the mountain’s crest

The threefold death he suffers that thy sins may rest

The other to his father cries ‘My God! why has thou forsaken me?’

And tears the sky with outrage of his godly pain

While at his feet the soldiers spoil his meagre goods

And mock him in disdain

Perplexed thou art by double vision of God’s son

The threefold death upon the cross both bear in pain

For both the world in death was won

And both ‘tis said will rise again

Thy vision fades and bears thee back from legend’s halls

Back to the comfort, love and grace of  home’s familiar walls

Yet deep within thy soul the vision stays

Of Christ and Odin, brothers in the tales of bygone days
