Humanity's long love affair with alcohol leaves none of us untouched, whether by the social consequences or the impact on our personal lives through a closer association.
I have certainly consumed a good deal more than my 'fair share' over the past thirty five years.

Curiously, my mind has always remained dichotomised, one half remaining aloof from the deep depressions and raving 'high's' alcohol can induce, the other knowingly immersing itself in the chemically wrought emotions that inevitable emerge through the neural effects of this drug. These two intellectual centers actually speak with each other at times.

Anyway, here's the product of my latest hangover...This is another work I'd love to hear from Ozzy Osbourne - he'd really do it justice I think - OZZY OSBOURNE - CALLING OZZY!!!

Listless dregs of a dying soul

Flayed and abused by the poisons of life

Rancid cloyed steam of  wet tumour, red coals

Cold vapour of ruin, of horror, of strife

Fearful shadows of pain and of  blight

Crystallized steel at the blade of the knife

Cracked voices that howl at the edge of the night

Come death! Blessed cure for the torment of life

Noxious the odour of  long rotted thoughts

Their ragged wet fibres I’ll weave as a shroud

A fine garment of death for the pilgrim we bought

The evil in flesh who speaks now aloud

See! See the pained glory of  meat in the pot

A huddle of monkeys brings blade to the flesh

In rank concentration against god do they plot

Their dark chthonic spells our souls do enmesh

Of blood and of semen and spears and of gold

Of rapine and murder and ships and of gales

Of shouts to great Zeus on the breath of the bold

Of these things are wrought all of humankind’s tales

Within the tight coffin of life  we are caught

Shut off from the icy cool dark of night’s hell

With only one thing can our freedom be bought

Flow blood! Cease Heart! I relinquish the shell

The dregs of my mind tore open the rift

Compelled and stirred up by a surfeit of beer

My mind to my demons I made as a gift

Leaving me lost, deluded, quite queer.

The metaphors in this are incredible. You write well of the dark side!

You've grasped well the truth, that life is a series of small deaths.
Well written and expressed.

Though, I am a Christian (as per your comment, and btw, thank you) I love your use of language and was a huge drinker for yrs, got 'sober' for 10 yrs at least for the alcohol part, fell off the wagon, for 2.

At this writing it's been 4 yrs since I've had a drink, and this may sound ludicrous but my best poetry came from the drunk yrs. lol. Really good stuff. You might check out my poem 'What lies in sight, originally written in my high times. Also, to this day am a huge fan of Ozzy.

Take it easy, Janet

This is a dark one Keith but it speaks of reality and is well penned.

Keith, I wouldn't have imagined this kind of thoughts as being specifically linked to alcohol. Interesting. In a way, your poem makes me think of lyrics for doom metal songs.
