a child is lost and I am heartbroken.

A child died and I was heartbroken

Beloved Angel Adrian Child

RD Larson

Your suffering is mine;

my heart falls dead
in your black pain

would I, had I taken you for my own,
this then is my despair and guilt

I only wish it had been me instead of you.

Your shining face and fragile soul
will mark forever these words of  true mother loveas you lie clinging helplessly to life

Survive, dear Adrian, please.

Broken and Tortured,
know somehow that you are

my child of the universe

my hope, my mother's love is in your heart.
You are the child I love; the child I love.
Come back from the abyss

I will shelter you
with my body and my mind against all enemies
if there is a bitter outcome
I will take up your cause

Your innocent self is my beacon of motherhood
If somehow you can come back from the dark, you will have
a home with a motherwho will love and care for you
forevereven though you may not be with me
even though you may pass from life

know in your tiny heart that
I love you with every fiber of my being
and you will forever be the child

The next day Adrian died, a victim of child abuse; is mother was arrested for the crime

2005 RDLarson

According to some estimates,up to 80 percent of child abuse cases involve drug- or alcohol-addicted parents. The case that comes most quickly to mind, of course, is the death of young Adrian Conway, whose mother, a drug user, has been charged with murder

Having worked in public schools for years, and having known of cases which, though reported, our hands were tied, this touches me very deeply. Too many laws we have, too many 'rights' to protect, not enough intervention. The tragic result is that children die. And we go on thinking 'we've tried, but 'tried' is not enough!

Thank you for writing this, RD. And thank you for sharing it with us.

You've portrayed the helplessness and the hope that a loving will can make a difference in a tiny abused life, RD. I am so sorry for this child, for them all. Your poem is piercingly sad...

Shockinly sad, but bravely written.
A child's pain becomes our own.
Peace and hugs to you
