I wrote this poem when I worked as a vet tech. One of my jobs was to hold and comfort animals as they were put to sleep and then carry their lifeless bodies to the freezer. I've often wondered what went through a dogs mind leading up to this point. This is my version from a dogs point of view.

These old bones arenít what they used to be anymore
Little aches and pains, stiffness.
Whatís this?
My pet wants to take me for a ride.
Well, okay.

I like riding through this city
Squeezing out a bark every now and then
when I see another dog
Even barking becomes a task sometimes.

Oh no, not the vet again!
Well, let me go to the bathroom first.
Here we go into the exam room
What are you two talking about?
Why is my pet crying?
Itís okay, Iím just getting my shots arenít I?
Iíll be back.

Your hugs are so warm, I know you love me
hereís a kiss to show you I love you too.
Oh boy, the doctor took my leash and is leading me into the back room.
Why is my pet crying?

Whoís this, another doctor?
Why are you making me lie down?
Be gentle, Iím old.

Whatís that youíre putting around my legĖooh!
Itís tight!
Whatís in that syringe?
I doesnít look like my usual vaccination.
Ouch! That pinched!

Woah, this is weird
Iím tired, it comes with old age
Iíve never been so tired....

Iíll just put my head down and close my eyes....
So tired....
Whereís my pet?
Iím cold........††
