Karena weeps as she remembers the devastation this white man has created. She Is sick in her heart. Mourning for her people. So many senseless killings, so much destruction, unbearable to her spirit. "Why Is this happening?" she asks herself. Why has Chief Dale betrayed us?"
There was a time when her people were free to live on their land without fear or persecution. Now, they cannot even sleep for fear the village will be attacked. The white man has no conscience, they only have murder in their hearts.
What has my people done to deserve this treatment? We only attack them in retaliation, fighting for what rightfully belongs to us.
At what point did the white man decide to take everything from us? Why can't they go back to their Mother Land, England? Were they banished for such behavior there? Did those white men not want these bunch of dogs that hates us?
The Great Spirit has abandoned us. What are we to do? The White Man attacks more and more often. Forcing us to flee and relocate, we are tired of running. I must do something to stop this. I will call a war consel, demand action by the elders. Surely Powhatan will listen to them.
The White man's chief, Dale is dead to me. I cannot trust him any longer. He lies with his tongue and has evil in his heart. I curse him. How dare he think he could kidnap our Pocahontas, and threaten our Chief's life. This is the most vile thing that could ever happen to my people.
Karena grabs Dale's arm, and says, "Come, Dale, we are going to Powhatan now."
Karena drags Dale out of her Tipi and asks Tumas to help her bring Dale to Powhatan's dwelling.
Karena clears her throat and says, "My honored Chief, I bring you this white man who has betrayed your people". She pushes Dale inside the dwelling. "What are you going to do about him? Your people deserve justice." Karena looks at Powhatan and he motions to her to sit down.
"Dale, you stand before me, I want to see what is in your heart, you are a foolish man, Sir Dale".
Powhatan begins to meditate and chant, it takes a few minutes before he speaks again,
*(1) "Why should you take by force from us, that, which you can have by love? Why should you destroy us, who have provided you with food? What can you get by war? I am not so simple as to not know it is better to eat good meat, lie well, and sleep quietly with my women and children; to laugh and be merry with the English; and being their friend, to have copper, hatchets, and whatever else I want, than to fly from all, to lie cold in the woods, and be so hunted, that I cannot rest, eat or sleep?"
Dale says nothing, only listens to the powerful Chief, while avoiding his words as if they were arrows from the chief's bow. "You, Dale, Chief of the White Man, I speak to your heart, can you live with yourself? Do you have such hatred living inside of your life blood? Can you not see how my people trusted you, and you turned into a snake with venomous poison? Do you want this war to destroy all of us? I do not like war, I have always chosen a peaceful solution to all conflicts. You force us to defend our honor and our land. Now, what am I to do with you? Karena has bravely captured you and brought you here to me. I must decide whether you will live or die by my hands."
Powhatan, stands and walks out of his dwelling. He walks toward the sacred circle, where all thoughts and visions are found through clarity of mind and spirit. "Great Spirit fill me with the wisdom and courage that I now need. I do not want death to this white man, but I fear that if I release him to his people, it could be the end for my people. I need guidance, please fill me with the power to make the right choice."
Meanwhile back in the Chief's dwelling, Karena paces around Dale, getting angrier and angier by the minute. Dale shows no emotion and remains silent. "Well," Karena starts, "what can you say to save yourself?"
Dale clears his throat and begins, "Karena, I am ready to die for my people, but I want you to know that upon my death, there will be a war like no other. I have kept my troops at bay as much as I could. Without me in charge, your people are doomed. I shall remain as I am and will accept my fate". "Foolish, hateful white man" Karena yells back and spits in his face. She pushes him to the ground and tightens his bindings. Shoves the leather gag back into his mouth and says to him, " You think you will have a quick death? well think again you evil man." She then calls for Tumas to get him out of the Chief's dwelling. Tumas drags him back to their tipi.
Powhatan returns to Karena, and says to her, "Please, Karena, do not let hatred into your beautiful heart, you are a healer, not a killer. Go to your man, let him comfort you. I need this night to decide what Dale's fate will be."
He embraces Karena and sends her off to Tumas.
