A PIRATE'S TALE

I remember it all as if it was yesterday
the cold, salty spray slapping my face
when clouds billowed up like monsters
to menace the visage of deepest place
aye, I thought many a time this storm
to be my last but myriad racked my bones
and I knew the dark sea would be my grave
she would take me for many sins to atone
blood lust and greed for golden treasure
I had stolen many shiny Spanish doubloons
and plundered the bounty of maidens fair
then left them, sailing away into thick gloom

for I was a dark, wicked pirate showing mercy to none
I knew the sea would claim me when my life was done

there was not a man who walked the earth
who impressed or frightened Captain Juan
my swagger was recognized on the islands
and I was bested nor intimidated by none
I shouted the orders to my crew, “Seadogs
hoist the sails. set our course toward Nassau”
the death waves were high and treacherous
on winter day when the spray stung cold and raw
they did protest but to no avail; my orders stood
I’d had enough of Virginia’s frigid Chesapeake Bay
They pleaded saying “Captain this be not good”

but I was a dark, wicked pirate, showing mercy to none
and it would be me or the sea, before this voyage was done
