An allegorical poem for “credit crunch” days

It was the time for our annual rush

To jump off the cliff and land with a crush,

When one bright one amongst us meekly said:

“I would much rather stay home in my bed”.

We stopped there, looked at each other and said:

“Mass suicide is really rather sad;

Let’s phone Samaritans and ask for help,

Before we decide to jump with a yelp.”

One old one amongst us reached for his phone,

Started dialling with a moan and groan,

Then just waited for someone to answer,

With his heart beating faster and faster.

But there was no luck, no reply at all,

No Samaritans to answer our call,

So we shrugged our shoulders and with a sigh,

Started marching again, ready to die

Singing, shouting: “ If only… only if…”

As we hurled ourselves down from the darned cliff…

Hope and wait for other’s help only if

You are prepared to die under a cliff…

“Stumbling upon”  the cartoon on the internet, combined with current

“Credit Crunch” blues and mentality inspired this poem.

"If only… only if…" people decide to think we can prevent mass suicidal that is about to get on the headlines of the main papers around the globe... I can sense the reality in this allegorical vision of prophetic imagery.

I have enjoyed the reading of "If only… only if…" for its language's gradeur and poetic majesty; and for its message and symbolism.

In admiration,

Reading this I felt like a lemming. Luckily, I was soothed by your previous sonnet. A delightful one.

Gotta do for the self and ask for help only when needed, but not TOO VERY often, as help can, if over used, turn one down...Ed

Very clever write Peter. Your metaphor is not lost to this reader. Well done indeed.

Sad write, Peter, but I am learning to lean on the Lord Jesus Christ to get me through these hard times! What more CAN we do?

(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in America, Karen Lynn in Texas.

Sad, when we can't rely upon our fellow man - it's one for all, and one for ONE nowadays - excellent write. But not giving up THAT easily - with God's Grace, we'll make it, Karen and I! Well penned.

((((HUGS)))) and love, Karla.
