“Where do you get that marvelous tan?”

…I figure it was the shadow over my father
…that shadow he carried with him from his father
…that shadow he couldn’t shake…though I’m sure he tried…
…he couldn’t wash it off
…he couldn’t make it disappear
…he couldn’t cover it up
…he couldn’t make it any lighter
…nobody ever really asked
…but I’m sure some suspected
…particularly when they saw his son
…and his little girls running around
“you look so much like your father!” they’d all say
…I wonder if he was ever a little scared when he heard that
…or when people started to ask me “where I was from”
…or when I started digging…
…shadows are everywhere the sun shines
…no need to stand under a cloud… …anymore
