Captives

To me it was always a curious mystery when thinking of man's mortal disposition.

From his beginning to the end of his time here
in agony man has wrestled with his passions and desires,
while trying to control the freedom of their spirited beauty.

And then, while on a journey into the desert,
in the hot sand laid the skeleton of a man.
To my surprise I saw what looked like a cage,
where once were held as captives,
a restless soul and a yearning heart.

But above this prison of bones sat a skull,
and where his mind once was,
now laid an old and rusted key.

The mind holds the key to hearts and souls release.
thus the key of ascension.

I just wonder what the key opens ...

I have a vivid vision of a skeleton in the desert. The desert is a harsh place where it is easy to die if one does not have water. And then the desert does not give up its dead easily. Instead the dead are displayed for a very long time until the sands cover them or they simply crumble away. It is striking to see such a sight and one often wonders what happened to cause the poor person's death.
