Living alone out in the country...

The windís blowing strong out of the east
Thereís rain dripping off of the eaves,
Thereís an eerie feel in the house tonight
And the catís hiding under the bed!

I look out the door and see shadows out there
But there isnít a tree or a shrub,
That part of the lawn is nothing but grass
And the catís hiding under the bed!

I look once again and see the glimmer of eyes
The shadows are coming much closer,
The shotgun is loaded with 20 gauge shells
And the catís hiding under the bed!

A flash in the sky lights up the front yard
What I see takes my breath away,
Four figures in black, carrying knives and clubs
They are quickly approaching my door.

I hear steps on the porch, a knife rips through the screen
I stand ready with shotgun in hand,
Another flash in the sky, I awaken in fear
And the catís hiding under the bed!

omigosh, what a relief when I got to those words: "I awaken in fear."
Excellent! The suspense builds with every line, and the cat hiding under the bed adds so much to the increasing fear. This is great!

Great poem, Sandy. I live out in the country too, and I know how cruel the imagination can be in the wee hours.
Enjoyed this!

Wow! You scared me and it's 8:21 in the morning! See? I keep telling my family there is no way I'm camping out in the wilderness, not gonna happen without a swat team hiding under the bed! Loved this!
