Felix Perry and I co-wrote this poem.
Fee, it was a pleasure writing with you!

A Lover, A Friend

She whispers a lover's name to the wind
That blows truth across the sea.
While another man watches from a distance,
Wishing she'd look at him and see.

He'd be by her side in a heartbeat
If she'd only believe love could be,
But he knew he could settle for friendship
Like he had, for her heart wasn't free.

She paced forlorn on her widow's walk,
Heart knowing her love gone for good.
He was now in the heavens above her.
The sea had claimed him, she understood.

It had been so long, years and tears pacing,
Watching for his boat to return
And the friend had become more in her heart.
Could she love him? Would he ever love her?

Between them, there was a wall,
An invisible wall he dared never cross.
As he threw driftwood on his beach fire,
He ached so much for her great loss.

Each night he lit his beach fire
In case someday she noticed the light.
His arms ached to comfort and console her
As they had in friendship so often at night.

She saw in the glow from the fire,
As she wiped one more time at the tears,
The friend whose strength held her in comfort,
The friend who forever was near.

The man who was there to console her
While for years she grief-raged at life,
Was the same man she now knew she loved
If he would have her, she'd be his wife.

On the beach she held out her arms
This time, not for comfort of tears.
This time, they'd be one together
To share love for the rest of their years.

How you two do get it on, get it said, get it done! ! ! It is truly mind boggling how two writers can come through with such a lovely and poignant poem as this. Congratulations to each of you for fine writing... fine collaborative writing, indeed.

As a old hand coming from the sea, you two gave me a flashing picture of embers on the beach illuminating the face of my love, with gratefully tears for returning and a smile saying of all those years ahead.
Great poem!
