and when the black rain comes

I wrote and posted this "song" on August 4th, 2008, LONG BEFORE the unfolding disaster in the Gulf of April 2010, that is bringing our Ocean Life to the BRINK of DEATH. I have always been against offshore drilling as NOT WORTH THE PRICE for so little oil... AND IF you are so smart as to think it is and that just because you don't see the oil it is not going to spread a finger of death across the food chain, may it end up on your plate and in YOUR bloodstream... Because eventually it will. The oceans serve all our foodchain including the rains that fall on crops. So don't be smug you inlanders. WE are nearing the end but NOT by GOD but by our mad-man-made God named O.I.L.
How sad...when the dying begins so slowly. MEANWHILE DRIVE LESS, EAT less plastic-enrobed 1-use disposable food choices. And mircowave less as that food is not only not as healthy but consumes far too much plastic and energy. Cook & eat natural foods the old-fashioned way!

And when the black rain comes
[“Our God: O.I.L.”]

Every day the money – is on their table

(….and their stock goes up!)

Every day they talk - as they spin their fable:

We must dig, drill and serve,        [our God, O.I.L.]

"We do not have the time or the WILL,

To preserve the species, make better cars, selectively DRILL,

For to be independent and free     [of our God, O.I.L.]

WE must burn our precious resources" (i.e. Wilderness!!)

Barren land & Black sea to churn like a living hell,

All in the name of our GOD: O.I.L.

…and when the black rain comes,

Remember: it’s their God, but your hell!

Refrain> …and when the black rain comes,

Just remember children, it’s our hell

All in the name of “their” God, O.I.L.

And when the black waves crash,

And you’re still “empty” while they’ve got a stash (!)

Will you STILL excuse them? And RATIONLIZE

        The exploiters as JUSTIFIED {Yea, while they “lied”}

But if I point out this truth, I am accused of being

Irrational – unpatriotic – and uncouth!

Yet, WE (the People) were founded on “straight-talk”

                NOT smoke-screened untruth!

And so WE are all to “serve”

And dig up everything to be “free”

Of the very beast who demands (Everyday!)

We prostrate in homage on bended-knee

But don’t you see children? Don’t you see?

Sooner (not later) we must say (and mean) NO!

“You & your God” must take the cut,

        REDUCE CONSUMPTION before WE GO!

You say we have no choice but to serve (your GOD, O.I.L.)

...but when the black rains comes…

[and we must fight and die to get more O.I.L.]

Just remember (and tell) your CHILDREN:

                complain NOT  - Don’t yell!

For it’s THEIR God but

          But (Y)OUR hell!

…and when the black rains comes (and you)

Fill the skies with all your lies

Sooner or later WE must say NO!

Later will not do – “not now” they say

        But we will in 2022!!

“We can’t make better mileage cars and light trucks”

[the same old refrain:>]

Is so UNTRIED and UNTRUE (!)

“NOT NOW” the oil/auto gurus say:

“You” didn’t DEMAND THEM!

Well that’s true —for this we’ll pay:

And we all sing: [the same old refrain:>]

Refrain

…and when the black rain comes,

Fills the skies with all their lies

Just remember children, it’s our ”Living” hell

All in the name of “OUR” God:  O.I.L.

A heartfelt expressive poetic composure! Bravo! I agree that man will destroy what God has provided. God has Blessed America now will man curse the blessing?

Michael - a shallow God indeed. We have known its limitations and that it's finite for decades yet we still worship at that well. - David

Absolute truth! Very well-penned verse here Michael... games of the rich... we & the Earth, and all of her species are merely collateral damage to them. Nice job!

Very well thought out and deep. Reduce consumption this is the key. Don't think anything will change though, not in our society. A great write. :)

This is so scary in its truth. We are polluting the land with our O.I.L. and trying to figure how to make more. Cat Stevens wrote a song similar to this, it was about all the "improvements" Man was making, the name of the song was "Where do the Children Play. So appropriate for our times. You've given all something to think about in your "cut-to-the" chase words. Thank you.

"Oh, give me a ho-o-o-o-ome where the buffalo ro-o-o-oo-am." I think I was born in the wrong century. Is it so wrong of me to go backwards down that progress road? I'm all for horses and buggies. Isn't it funny, how in our rush to simplify things we've gotten so messed up and complicated? --Charlie

Great tome to our malaise. We the people are at fault for being greedy and sucked into the lie of OIL. One thing is sure, we will be forced into conservation and innovation eventually, and a much lower standard of life.

You bring out many good points in this piece, enlightening the spirit to see past the lies which lay in front of us. We the people did not cause this, politicians and lobbyists did as they will continue to do....

Just remember children, it’s our ”Living” hell
All in the name of “OUR” God: O.I.L.

How truly foolish, and how truly naive a nation, we have become. And no one bothers to do any research into Black Gold, or into Alternative Energy. Some politician yells, "Offshore Drilling will save us!" and millions of American citizens, immediately believe.

The cold hard facts are we gluttonous Americans consume 25 percent of all black gold produced today, yet, according to most geological studies, our own land and shores only hold about 3 percent of all the Black Gold left on Earth. The math doesn't seem that hard - we will always be dependent on foreign oil, if we don't stop consuming it.

But Offshore Drilling is gonna save us! Look for real cheap gasoline at your neighborhood pump, real soon!!!
